I surrendered to the hype... If it is popular culture or pop culture, I AM INTERESTED, I WANT TO KNOW.
So there was a huge hype about this "erotica" novel. Then it came the movie, and everyone was talking about it. Finally last night at midnight, it was released. So my friend wanted to see it, and I am more than happy to go out and chill out with a friend.
I must admit that I tried to read the books, but I couldn't make it. I got to the contract and got frankly bored and sickened. Sickened not because of the things listed in the contract, but because it was an awful lot to read, not so well written. So I decided to leave it for good. (Here I must say that at some point I liked "Twilight" so you know that I can handle "bad" and "cheap" literature.)
But at the office, well, people were loving it! And so around the Internet. This movie was a must, specially because I thought that I needed not to read the books as the three of them were adapted into just one movie. WRONG!
Well, I am moving ahead of my thinking, which is always so disperse and unconnected. (I'm not a good writer either, so I do not write stories. But I am a Book Eater.)
The good thing about the movie it's its marketing. They sold me 3 books in 1 movie, but no! It was a well kept secret. So after an hour or so, my friend realized that it was only the first one and two hours later, it left us with a big cliffhanger. So good on Marketing I give you 10/10.
Jamie Dornan is a great actor, he is handsome enough but he's not Benedict Cumberbatch. The wardrobe people got a 10/10 with all his suits, they were perfectly tailored for highlighting his body. The blue one was specially nice. Plus Dakota's clothing weren't that bad. The dress she wears in the meeting was per-fect!
Bad points are now given to:
- Lightning: If this movie was meant to be shown in a cinema, lights off and just the screen in the front, well, was poorly thought through. I counted 3 clean cuts from dark to light that irritated my eyes, and I have never had surgery in the eyes, for my sister that may be a torture.
- Hair: Really? Christian is giving Anastasia a MacBook, an expensive car and fine clothing BUT NOT A HAIR STRAIGHTENER? He is taking her to a fancy dinner with his wealthy family and she has a bad hair day... No really, he is being a control freak with her but allows her to go with that hair. I believe that to be false. That broke the dream out of me.
- Grey's discourse. Seriously? if Liisa thought I lack cohesion and coherence, she must have heard Christian's discourse in Anabelle's graduation. I know that it was merely to occupy a bit of story but they could have made better lines, like, make them sound part of the same idea. Could have been short like the one at the end of Legally Blonde. It was meaningless to the whole development of the story but they could have put just an ounce of effort and then let it go.
Now, I am not talking about the archetypes in chick-lit, but a 22 y.o. lady, born and raised in USA, that lives with a roomate and not with her family and has never had sex? I find it hard to believe after all those prom-movies where everyone rents a hotel room for the after party. So the character was not believable for me at all. I had difficulties believing that she had never had sex nor even done anything sexually related.
I certanly can see why is so appealing to women (and here well, I have to mention the character of the girl-next-door): Christian Grey is sexy, good looking, attent, wealthy, and correct man. He can't be real! he's too perfect. On the other hand, we have this girl, off the rack, not so stylish, normal, average, girl-next-door that doesn't know she is beautiful. And guess what? she finds out the only crack in Christian's perfection... he is a dominant (and I must say that he looks more like a sex addict). And here is nice and good Anastasia to love him and change him... I haven't read the books I should repeat, but I assume that in the end, they end up happy together. If I am wrong, please correct me.
Other aspect that attracted my attention was the reason Grey gives Steele to accept the Dominant/Submissive relationship: "because being ordered liberates you from responsibility". I remember a dear professor giving us the sylabus from the subject he was teaching with a footnote saying "Ignorance of the rules does not absolve you from the responsibility of their fulfillment." So I am having a hard time dealing with Grey's lines. But truly is liberating, because you live the minimus effort law and blame everyone else for the results. That is not exactly what my parents, professors and mentors tried to teach me through 22 years of education. Plus I am a millenial who wants to have a meaningful role in society, I can't go blindfolded through life. But once again, as Cypher once said "Ignorance is bliss".
I may sound Epicurean but... if you don't like pain, you fancy that idealized love, if you don't really know about your sexuality and bondage and so... why do you accept that kind of offer? why would you want to torture yourself? why would you allow being mistreated and violated? Plus I never heard about her fantasies.
Now the scholar in me wants to remind me and you about the "Male Gaze". Dakota's body is gorgeous indeed, not average, but thin, and pleasing to the eye. We get a lot of views of her body, full body, fully naked. I think that there is only 1 take of Jamie completely naked and I missed it because I was updating my Facebook's status. and that's it! I saw Jamie on Graham Norton's Show eating his abs (he was a cake) and they looked amazing... He was shirtless several times during the movie but, I didn't have the pleasure to really look at him and his abs, which was dissapointing.
To those riot girls, a good thing, once Anastasia is punished, SHE STANDS HER GROUND AND LEAVES GREY I repeat, SHE DOES NOT ALLOW HIM TO GET NEAR HER because she realized he was being violent to her; which I think that changes in the second movie/book... So it was confusing because it was truly violence. Grey gets excited by hitting Anastasia with a belt, and being hit like that is nowhere near pleasant (tell me about it, my Mother just did it once to me that I can remember and after that day, I've never put a toe out of line... EVER), so I found sick that he gets aroused by causing such pain... And who knows what he did to those other 15 girls (that weren't the one as apparently Anastasia is), where are they now? what are they doing? and could they live a healthy sexual life (whatever that is) free from violence after him?
So 50 shades makes prevail the idea that there is a "one" that will change everything, that love will make the toughest man be kind and loving and overcome every obstacle. I do not live in that world... so I'll go back to the Shadow Hunters and Luxen, that are the same song, different tune.
