I've just watched 50 shades of Grey

I surrendered to the hype... If it is popular culture or pop culture, I AM INTERESTED, I WANT TO KNOW.

So there was a huge hype about this "erotica" novel. Then it came the movie, and everyone was talking about it. Finally last night at midnight, it was released. So my friend wanted to see it, and I am more than happy to go out and chill out with a friend.

I must admit that I tried to read the books, but I couldn't make it. I got to the contract and got frankly bored and sickened. Sickened not because of the things listed in the contract, but because it was an awful lot to read, not so well written. So I decided to leave it for good. (Here I must say that at some point I liked "Twilight" so you know that I can handle "bad" and "cheap" literature.)

But at the office, well, people were loving it! And so around the Internet. This movie was a must, specially because I thought that I needed not to read the books as the three of them were adapted into just one movie. WRONG!

Well, I am moving ahead of my thinking, which is always so disperse and unconnected. (I'm not a good writer either, so I do not write stories. But I am a Book Eater.)

The good thing about the movie it's its marketing. They sold me 3 books in 1 movie, but no! It was a well kept secret. So after an hour or so, my friend realized that it was only the first one and two hours later, it left us with a big cliffhanger. So good on Marketing I give you 10/10.

Jamie Dornan is a great actor, he is handsome enough but he's not Benedict Cumberbatch. The wardrobe people got a 10/10 with all his suits, they were perfectly tailored for highlighting his body. The blue one was specially nice. Plus Dakota's clothing weren't that bad. The dress she wears in the meeting was per-fect!

Bad points are now given to:
- Lightning: If this movie was meant to be shown in a cinema, lights off and just the screen in the front, well, was poorly thought through. I counted 3 clean cuts from dark to light that irritated my eyes, and I have never had surgery in the eyes, for my sister that may be a torture.
- Hair: Really? Christian is giving Anastasia a MacBook, an expensive car and fine clothing BUT NOT A HAIR STRAIGHTENER? He is taking her to a fancy dinner with his wealthy family and she has a bad hair day... No really, he is being a control freak with her but allows her to go with that hair. I believe that to be false. That broke the dream out of me.
- Grey's discourse. Seriously? if Liisa thought I lack cohesion and coherence, she must have heard Christian's discourse in Anabelle's graduation. I know that it was merely to occupy a bit of story but they could have made better lines, like, make them sound part of the same idea. Could have been short like the one at the end of Legally Blonde. It was meaningless to the whole development of the story but they could have put just an ounce of effort and then let it go.

Now, I am not talking about the archetypes in chick-lit, but a 22 y.o. lady, born and raised in USA, that lives with a roomate and not with her family and has never had sex? I find it hard to believe after all those prom-movies where everyone rents a hotel room for the after party. So the character was not believable for me at all. I had difficulties believing that she had never had sex nor even done anything sexually related.

I certanly can see why is so appealing to women (and here well, I have to mention the character of the girl-next-door): Christian Grey is sexy, good looking, attent, wealthy, and correct man. He can't be real! he's too perfect. On the other hand, we have this girl, off the rack, not so stylish, normal, average, girl-next-door that doesn't know she is beautiful. And guess what? she finds out the only crack in Christian's perfection... he is a dominant (and I must say that he looks more like a sex addict). And here is nice and good Anastasia to love him and change him... I haven't read the books I should repeat, but I assume that in the end, they end up happy together. If I am wrong, please correct me.
Other aspect that attracted my attention was the reason Grey gives Steele to accept the Dominant/Submissive relationship: "because being ordered liberates you from responsibility". I remember a dear professor giving us the sylabus from the subject he was teaching with a footnote saying "Ignorance of the rules does not absolve you from the responsibility of their fulfillment." So I am having a hard time dealing with Grey's lines. But truly is liberating, because you live the minimus effort law and blame everyone else for the results. That is not exactly what my parents, professors and mentors tried to teach me through 22 years of education.  Plus I am a millenial who wants to have a meaningful role in society, I can't go blindfolded through life. But once again, as Cypher once said "Ignorance is bliss".

I may sound Epicurean but... if you don't like pain, you fancy that idealized love, if you don't really know about your sexuality and bondage and so... why do you accept that kind of offer? why would you want to torture yourself? why would you allow being mistreated and violated? Plus I never heard about her fantasies.

Now the scholar in me wants to remind me and you about the "Male Gaze". Dakota's body is gorgeous indeed, not average, but thin, and pleasing to the eye. We get a lot of views of her body, full body, fully naked. I think that there is only 1 take of Jamie completely naked and I missed it because I was updating my Facebook's status. and that's it! I saw Jamie on Graham Norton's Show eating his abs (he was a cake) and they looked amazing... He was shirtless several times during the movie but, I didn't have the pleasure to really look at him and his abs, which was dissapointing.

To those riot girls, a good thing, once Anastasia is punished, SHE STANDS HER GROUND AND LEAVES GREY I repeat, SHE DOES NOT ALLOW HIM TO GET NEAR HER because she realized he was being violent to her; which I think that changes in the second movie/book... So it was confusing because it was truly violence. Grey gets excited by hitting Anastasia with a belt, and being hit like that is nowhere near pleasant (tell me about it, my Mother just did it once to me that I can remember and after that day, I've never put a toe out of line... EVER), so I found sick that he gets aroused by causing such  pain... And who knows what he did to those other 15 girls (that weren't the one as apparently Anastasia is), where are they now? what are they doing? and could they live a healthy sexual life (whatever that is) free from violence after him?

So 50 shades makes prevail the idea that there is a "one" that will change everything, that love will make the toughest man be kind and loving and overcome every obstacle.  I do not live in that world... so I'll go back to the Shadow Hunters and Luxen, that are the same song, different tune.

Why I did not like the last episode of HIMYM.

In 2010, when I went to live in Finland, I met an amazing person who introduced me to How I Met Your Mother.  During the long dark autumn nights, we sat and watch from season 1 episode 1, to the last one that was aired. So when I came back to Mexico almost 3 years ago, I was waiting every single week for the new episode. Well yes, the story became slow and less interesting with each episode, but I could not close that chapter until I learn how Ted found the love of his life, because that was the show about no?
WRONG! The last season was exasperating for me. It had great gags, as all series had, and the Mother was introduced. I thought that she was simply lovely and perfect fit for the group. With Ted letting go of Robin for her wedding to Barney and Tracy being introduced… I thought Ted will find happiness ever after. But no, the idea was other.  And the experience of last episode was spoiled for me by the Internet and HIMYM’s Fan Page on Facebook, as the ending was let away by them. So I went online and watch only the last part, and decided not to continue watching the last season (I was 3 episodes behind).
To date, everyone who was a follower knows that Ted and Tracy meet at the station and start dating, they have 2 kids and later, she dies. Barney and Robin’s marriage ends because Robin keeps working as reporter all across the globe while Barney still feels insecure (remember, I did not see the last episode), so Ted is telling the story of how he met Tracy to his kids because, now that Robin is single again, and he is a widower, he is asking permission to date her AGAIN! Duh!
It was wrong for me because of several aspects that I will enounce briefly:

  •       I WISHED FOR TED’S HAPPINESS. You may say that from the beginning of the series his love was Robin and that you can see it coming. Well, I could not and that was because Ted is so relatable, that I felt somehow identified with him. Obviously I wished him the best with every fail, with every time his heart was broken. Ted was so vulnerable, and he even tried a relationship with Robin that did not succeeded… so I really wished that he finds love in the end.

  •       THERE IS A BRO CODE. Perhaps no like the one of Barney, but there are implicit rules to dating & friends that have not been compiled. I have lost friends because of those rules. And one of them is that Ex-s are out of boundaries. So, at first, Ted was “over Robin” so Barney and she could go and look for their happiness. They even got married… and Ted let her go in that beach. Why going back?

  •       I HOPED FOR TED TO MOVE ON. During 8 seasons we saw failed relationships, one after another. So finally in that beach, he seemed ready to move on and make a change in his destiny. And then The Mother appeared, yes! The best was yet to come… until she got sick and died… so he went back to his old love of Robin.

  •       TRACY WAS PERFECT FOR TED. Everything he wished for was before his eyes, and she loved him back. She was made for living him, He was made for loving her. Fairytales fall short with this romance that took Ted years of concocting.

So the story was not about how he met the mother, but how he loved Robin above all and every single woman he met during his life. A friend told me that the last episode was meant to happen. I did not like it, but was not my show. What is true is that now I have no desire of watch it again, I have tried to watch re-runs, but they are not hooking me as before. I do not want to know the mystery of the pineapple, I have not called anything a Challenge Accepted or Legendary, and I am the one who re-reads Harry Potter series every 2 years even though some beloved characters die.
The scholar in me understand HIMYM perfectly, but the fan in me thanks the fates that I never bought the series on DVD, I would have regretted. Fans have taken different sides, but many of us coincide that the end meant a step backwards for the development of the characters and the series in general.

HIMYM is not Friends, was not meant to and will never be. It was hard to let go Friends, leaving he keys meant leaving a part of your heart there, it was bittersweet but lovable. HIMYM is bittersweet but for me, forgettable. (Remember, this is only my opinion as fan).

Why do I like Youtube?

I
really like YouTube. You can find anything in YouTube, or so it seems. YouTube is one of the websites I visit regularly. It is on my Google Chrome bookmarks. I have an account and playlists there. And my YouTube account is linked to my other social networks: Facebook and Twitter. In this matter, if I ever like or comment about a video on YouTube it gets published in my other virtual identities.
Nowadays is undeniable that YouTube has become one of the main and most known social websites in the whole Internet. YouTube as social phenomena has attracted scholars. Little of this was foreseen by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim when in 2005 they officially launched YouTube’s website. YouTube is a website that aimed to remove the technical barriers to the widespread sharing of video online, allowing users to upload, publish and view streaming videos without high levels of technical knowledge (Burgess & Green, 2009).  As social network, YouTube has four key features: video recommendations, video sharing, comments and embeddable video player. The innovation of YouTube was that you did not need to install or download any application to play and share videos. Burgues & Green mention that back in 2005 YouTube vaguely recognized itself as a place to show off and blog videos to the world; videos of pets, the ones you take with your camera or cell phone; videos of your friend and family and much more (2009, p. 3). Nowadays they promote themselves with the slogan “Broadcast yourself”, which implies that you share not only your personal videos, but whatever that can be related to yourself and your interests.
Throughout their publication, Burgues & Green examine YouTube as a site of participatory and convergence culture with the help of Henry Jenkins (they landmark in the matter); YouTube as a public sphere and a matter of citizenship; and YouTube as an accidental archive.  As a site of participatory culture, YouTube fits the definition of the web 2.0 that relies on user-generated content, because the ones that use produce and upload videos, are the ones that watch them. Burgues & Green pay special attention to the implications of YouTube as a social network platform and how relations among users are held. For instance, there is a reference to the controversy of Oprah’s incursion to YouTube and the reaction from the YouTube community (pp. 90-94). Basically, fans declared the decease of the golden age of YouTube with the incursion of corporative channels. Users apparently felt that the community they were participating in was unrewarded; all their time spent building up a community gave them no advantages over public figures as Oprah. Their sense of community was then shacked, affected and put to test. Nowadays VEVO has a great penetration in YouTube and host most of the Official channels of music stars. These channels pay special attention to copyright issues and usually block and report when common users infringe the copyright. This creates certain frustration among users because videos constantly disappear and must be relocated with different names, descriptions or accounts.
Out of the ideas that Burgues & Green examine, the one that seemed more interesting to me is “The accidental Archive”.  They write a little more than 3 pages of this topic, nonetheless it names perfectly what I find more amusing and entertaining of YouTube.  Although the authors do not quote or mention how they got this information, they affirm that to the question “what do you watch on YouTube?” people often mention old music videos or forgotten TV commercials. In a way, what everyone is trying to do is “recapture(ing) memories from their childhood or young adulthood, navigating through related videos or keyword searches, often discovering media moments they thought had been lost forever” (Burgess & Green, 2009, p. 87). In this sense, the authors foresee that if YouTube remains in existence, it will become a record of contemporary culture. In my opinion, it has become already a record of who we are now.

At certain point, I became interested in how everything seems to be available in YouTube. In how those TV series that I vaguely remembered had a space in YouTube, and how everyone seemed interested in getting more videos of those memories. I became interested then in finding how this nostalgia created bonds between users. I found interesting how video responses were linked by a common memory: if you watched this, you surely watched this one, come and comment.
YouTube is a place to hang out and remember, for finding memories and bond, for reinvent and restart, doing new things with old videos. And I really like how we can find ourselves if we get a little lost in those millions of videos.
